Milwaukee Historic Home Renovation: Challenges & Successes

Milwaukee Historic Home Renovation

Milwaukee’s East Side is known for its historic homes, each with a story to tell. But for one family on Frederick Avenue, their home’s story was ready for a new chapter. What was once a traditional Milwaukee duplex—two separate residences stacked on top of each other—needed to become a single, unified home that better suited modern family living.

Compass Construction & Remodeling specializes in tackling projects that others deem “too hard” or even “impossible.” This historic home renovation was no exception. The key challenge? Converting the existing enclosed stairwell into a beautiful, functional centerpiece that connected both floors seamlessly while preserving the home’s rich character.

The Challenge: A Duplex Divided

The original home layout reflected its past as a rental duplex. The upper level had been entirely separate, accessible only by an enclosed staircase that led to a second exterior door. The home’s new owners envisioned a space where their family could move freely between floors—where the house felt cohesive, not divided.

The biggest obstacle? The existing staircase was tucked away, enclosed, and oriented toward what had been the second entrance. We needed to reimagine its function without sacrificing the home’s historic charm.

The Grand Stairwell: Blending Function & History

The transformation began with structural work to remove a key dividing wall, allowing for an open flow between levels. Instead of a hidden, enclosed stairway, we envisioned a grand staircase that would become the focal point of the home—an architectural feature that felt like it had always belonged.

Here’s how we made it happen:

  • Reorienting the Staircase – We turned the staircase to lead directly into the downstairs living area, ensuring a natural, inviting flow.
  • Custom Railing & Staining – To match the home’s historic character, we crafted a custom wood railing with a stain carefully selected to blend with the home’s original finishes.
  • Opening the Loft Space – Upstairs, a formerly enclosed area was transformed into an open loft, bringing in natural light and creating a sense of spaciousness.
  • Preserving History – Details matter in a historic home. We carefully protected elements like the original stained glass window and sections of vintage wallpaper, weaving the past into the home’s new design.

Each decision was made with respect for the home’s history and the homeowners’ desire for a functional, beautiful living space.

A Historic Home, Reimagined for Today

The result? A seamless remodeling from duplex to single-family home, where every design element feels intentional. The grand staircase is no longer an afterthought—it’s a stunning architectural feature that ties the entire house together. The loft’s openness, combined with preserved historic details, brings both modern livability and timeless charm.

But most importantly, this project wasn’t just about construction. It was about listening to the homeowners and understanding their vision—blending history with practicality, old with new, and ensuring their home remains a cherished part of Milwaukee’s architectural legacy.
