A Kitchen Renovation That Reshaped a Wauwatosa Home

Wauwatosa Kitchen

When a family in Wauwatosa reached out to us, they had a clear goal in mind: transform their dated kitchen into something truly special. It wasn’t just about updates—it was about creating a space that felt intentional, design-forward, and entirely theirs. Think wood floors, warm cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and sleek quartz countertops. A kitchen renovation that would result in a place where people would naturally gather.

What we at Compass Construction & Remodeling didn’t expect was how much more the house had to say once we started peeling back the layers. What began as a kitchen remodel quickly turned into a broader effort that spanned from the basement structure to the home’s exterior.

But that’s the kind of project we’re built for—where craftsmanship, problem-solving, and a little creativity come together to make something extraordinary.

Behind the Walls: A Bigger Story

As we got into demo, it became clear that the home had some structural issues that couldn’t be ignored. Load-bearing walls had been placed in the wrong locations, and there were signs of stress in the form of sagging, uneven floors. We traced the problem all the way to the basement. It turns out that load-bearing walls were in the wrong spot, causing dips in the floor. We were then able to fix the dipped floors with structural components.

Rather than patch over the issues, we tore into it, figured it out, and fixed it the right way. We added new structural supports, corrected the flooring dips, and brought everything back into alignment. While these aren’t the flashy parts of a renovation, they’re the parts that give homeowners peace of mind for years to come.

Expanding the Vision

With the home’s structure secure, we shifted our focus back to the kitchen and the design details the client had originally dreamed of. At this time, the project had grown to include other areas of the home as well, including the exterior.

To achieve the desired look and space dimensions within the kitchen, we closed up an outdated picture window and reworked the wall to support the new load path. We also removed some aging wood paneling and replaced it with beautiful cedar shake siding. As luck would have it, we had extra cedar shake material from a previous project, which meant we could offer the upgrade at a discount without compromising on quality.

We also installed new windows—white inside, black outside—for a crisp, modern finish that tied everything together.

Additionally, we reworked the HVAC system, a necessity that arose from moving and removing walls. This helped to set up the house for a future expansion.

High Design, Smart Decisions

Throughout the project, we stayed closely in sync with the homeowners. Like many clients, they came to us with big ideas—and an initial budget that didn’t quite work. Rather than tell them what they couldn’t do, we helped them figure out what mattered most.

One example: the waterfall countertop. They loved the look but weren’t sure it was worth the expense of having a waterfall effect on both ends. Together, we decided to apply it selectively—keeping the visual impact while keeping costs in check. The one-side waterfall effect acts as a visual centerpiece when viewed from the dining room.

Flooring posed another challenge. Matching the existing floors perfectly wasn’t an option, but we blended new and old materials so they look and feel deliberate, designed, and harmonious.

At every step, we focused on honoring their vision. Some contractors try to steer clients toward what’s easiest. That’s not our style. We offer guidance where it’s helpful, but we always respect what our clients want their homes to feel like.

A Kitchen Renovation That Became a Legacy

In the end, the kitchen became exactly what the family had hoped for: a space that felt like home. As they put it, “Everyone gathers in our kitchen—it’s the centerpiece of the house.”

They had to relocate out of state not long after the remodel was complete, but the work we did added real value. The home sold quickly, and they handily recouped their investment from the kitchen renovation. That’s the power of thoughtful design, solid construction, and getting it done right the first time.
