Custom Carpentry Milwaukee: Spotlight on John Martell
Craftsmanship is only part of our company story, but our people make the real difference. This spotlight blog series highlights the unique backgrounds and talents of our team members, offering you a deeper look at the individuals who bring Compass Construction & Remodeling’s projects to life. In our first spotlight, we featured Brett Kash, our co-founder. Now, in the second installment, we’re excited to introduce Project Manager John Martell, whose journey reflects both personal dedication and the qualities that make Compass unique.
Introducing John
For John Martell, his career in construction began early. At just 13, he spent summers working for his great uncle’s brokerage company, painting apartments and handling basic maintenance. Over time, small handyman work led to bigger opportunities. “People would say, ‘Oh, can you do this?’ And I would say, ‘Oh, yeah, absolutely.’ And I’d figure it out.” That willingness to take on challenges eventually grew into his own construction business in 2005.
Choosing Compass for Balance and Support
Running a business had its rewards, but also its challenges. John shared a moment that shifted his career path: His young daughter came up to him and said, “Don’t go back to work, Daddy. You work too much.” That reminder from his daughter inspired him to seek a healthier balance. By late 2022, he joined Compass Construction and Remodeling, where he found both support and fulfillment. As he explained, “Compass has been just a fantastic balance and it actually makes it enjoyable to come to work.”
Expertise in Framing and Finish Carpentry
John’s skill set runs deep. His strongest areas are structural framing and finish carpentry, specialties that support Compass’s reputation for tackling complex projects. He also has a passion for fine woodworking. In his former shop, he built custom furniture and even developed prototypes for a Montessori-inspired furniture line. While that venture never launched, it sharpened the craftsmanship he now brings to Compass’s remodeling projects.
Memorable Compass Projects
Since joining Compass, John has already contributed to landmark projects. One highlight was leading the company’s first dormer builds. “Something exciting about just cutting holes in roofs and blowing the top off a house,” he recalled, noting both the stress and satisfaction that came with the challenge. Another standout was a custom spiral staircase. John built a steam box to bend wood into graceful curves, applying detailed finishing that showcased Compass’s custom touch. Projects like these show how Compass blends technical skill with artistry, delivering results that stand apart in Milwaukee remodeling.
A Service Philosophy Beyond Construction
When asked what sets Compass apart, John was clear: “We aren’t just offering construction… it’s the partnership, not just a job.” For him, the true value lies in service that goes beyond the finished product. Superior communication, high-quality finishes, and a collaborative approach define Compass’s work. As John put it, “It’s more of the overall experience and service than just a product.”
